Maps, memory and the scholars who charted the world

Long before the age of satellites, scholars traced coastlines and trade routes with ink, testimony and patience. Their maps were arguments about how the world held together.

Travel was method as much as adventure. A student might cross continents for a single chain of narration, then spend years copying what he had heard.

What they preserved was not only information but a manner of handling it: attribution, verification, humility before the limits of one's own knowledge.
