Behind every visible community achievement sits an institution that rarely announces itself: the weekend school, the burial fund, the small circle that meets after ʿIshāʾ to read together.

These structures survive on trust rather than budgets. Their strength is measured in the number of people who would notice if they disappeared.

Where public institutions retreat, such initiatives quietly absorb the difference — arranging meals, mediating disputes, accompanying the bereaved through paperwork no one else will read.

The lesson is not that communities should replace larger systems, but that they must never outsource their sense of responsibility to them.

Investing in these small institutions is the least glamorous and most consequential work available to us.
