What survives of a civilisation is what it chose to preserve.

Empires are remembered for their borders, but they are known through their books. Territory is lost quickly; a catalogue can persist for centuries.
Preservation was never accidental. It required copyists, endowments, buildings, and a shared conviction that the work mattered beyond one lifetime.
When collections were scattered, individuals carried single volumes across deserts. Whole disciplines survived on such stubbornness.
The question for any community is simple: what are we preserving, and who has been entrusted with it?
A civilisation is, in the end, an argument about what deserves to be kept.
