Civilisation begins with a moral imagination

Architecture follows belief. A society that cannot imagine a good life will not build spaces that support one.

Our built environment records our priorities with uncomfortable accuracy: what we placed at the centre, what we pushed to the edges, what we made room for.

The classical Muslim city organised itself around worship, water and the marketplace — a sequence that expressed an order of value, not merely of convenience.

Reclaiming that instinct does not mean imitating old forms. It means recovering the questions those forms were answering.

Before we can build well, we must be able to describe what we are building towards.
